Peter Mertes has been a family-run business since its establishment in 1924. With more than 350 employees, today, we are a top player in the wine business, operating nationally and globally from our company headquarters situated in the world famous wine town of Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. In 1924, a German winemaker from the Mosel river had a vision. At a time and place where beer had long been established as the preferred drink of the people, he wanted as many people as possible to share his passion for wine. He founded a winery and gave it his name: Peter Mertes.
Currently family-run in the fourth generation and with a total of 350 employees, Peter Mertes is now Germany’s leading winery. Today as in the past, the winery’s philosophy is characterized by the passionate vision of the late company founder: “Wine is simply supposed to taste good and contribute to the enjoyment of life.”
Hence, the company’s logo, which can be found on the back label of Peter Mertes wines, not only signals taste and quality – it also entails the message that wine and life should simply be enjoyed.
Out of a profound passion for wine, and at a time where the consumption of wine was an exclusive privilege of the upper class, the winemaker Peter Mertes founded his own winery in 1924. His mission: to make wine accessible to people from all walks of life and to share his passion for wine with as many people as possible.
Now as in the past, the liberal thinking of our company founder remains deeply anchored in our company philosophy. We believe that, primarily, wine is supposed to taste good and contribute to the enjoyment of life.
Therefore, it is with passion and true ambition that our staff – many of whom privately run their own wine estates – work to offer you wines that tastefully accompany the precious moments of life.
