The «Cricova» winery enterprise was founded in 1952. Its founder was Petru N. Ungureanu, a master in viniculture and winemaking, who dreamed of sparkling wines that could be able to compete with the famous French champagne. He created an underground city at a hundred-meter depth, remaining after excavation of underground shell stone rocks (with 160 km length); it was intended by the nature itself for aging sparkling wines and vintage wines: an even temperature (12 – 14 degrees Celsius all the year round) and 98 % humidity. Here there are also the ideal climate conditions for growing grapes. It is impossible to wish a better place for the capital of wine. The holy of holies of the Cricova wine warehouses is the National Enoteca, with more than a million bottles of wine.
The «Cricova» wineryis the only enterprise in Moldova, which produces sparkling wines in accordance with the traditional French technology – «Méthode Champenoise», by secondary fermentation in bottles and subsequent «cuvee» aging in a horizontal position during at least three years.
